The City of Salt Lake has been nationally recognized for its leadership in urban and metropolitan sustainability measures. In 2013, we wrote a proposal for Salt Lake City Mayor Becker as a project within the Sustainability Department. The Proposal is an overall analysis of current and future actions for the City of Salt Lake in regards to divestment from fossil fuels on a city level. The Red Butte Watershed Project was funded by a grant from Chevron. In 2008, a pipeline that carries oil across the foothills of the Wastach to the oil refinery in North Salt Lake burst and dumped thousands of gallons of oil into Red Butte Creek, a reservoir that serves as both a pristine research area and as the urban drinking supply for Salt Lake City. The project was commissioned and conceived of by the University of Utah Biology Department to create a platform in which the Biology classes (and other departments) that studied the Red Butte research area would have an online and accessible way to contribute and track data year after year in order to compile a connected and broad overview of the effects of the oil spill and other manmade/ natural factors on a controlled research area.
